This week I’m excited to share with you my first article in our “CreateFuture Leaders” series.

Working with hundreds of executives to master targeted communication, motivation and leadership skills I am often asked what key things need to be looked at in order to set oneself up for success and therefore pass this on and create future leaders within the organisation or business. My answer is it all starts with you, right now. Regardless of gender, age, status and ethnicity we all have access to succeed in any role we are in if we have the will and want to do this. It’s your job to understand where you sit, right now so you know what you need to do so you can propel from a position of managing self and others to leading self and therefore develop the future leaders within your business. It’s your job, I believe, to be creating and developing the next “you” and failing to do this is failing future growth, potential and performance of others and the organisation you lead.

I’m a realist, many of us are time poor, and skill stretched and may feel as if we are running on empty doing all we can but not always the things that progress us forward. Even the thought of taking on more and focussing on developing future leaders can be daunting. I believe that a “people focus” is imperative and should come before a “progress focus”. Get the people right and self-lead in order for progress to happen.

I break up tasks and projects at work into two categories; progressive, those things that move us forward and maintenance; those day to day status quo type things. It’s the progressive things that keep us motivated and keep our leadership mojo in flow, the things you look back on that I believe contribute to your legacy. Managing your team is almost a “maintenance” posture as this is usually operational and as Stephen Covey quotes it, involves working in your team as opposed to working on your team which is a leadership energy.

Leading your team and developing their future skills is imperative and not only will you get time back to focus on the important things so you can lead not manage, in the process you will be motivating staff, understanding and leveraging their strengths, building a succession pipeline and lifting performance by having people doing the right thing at the right time and owning it. By leading with an open heart and mind, the pathway to do this will be exposed.

M.K. Gandhi inspired millions of people in India to fight for their rights, and he walked beside them so India could achieve independence in 1947. His vision became everyone’s dream and ensured that the country’s push for independence was unstoppable. I believe our planet needs more leaders like him who can think beyond problems, have a vision, and inspire people to convert challenges into opportunities, one step at a time.

I believe influence and inspiration separate leaders from managers, not power and control as many people may think or experience.

In my Limitless leadership model above the “Leading Leaders,” behaviour takes us to a place where we are leading industry and organisation and becoming co-creative in how we stand out.

What are you doing, right now, to develop your leadership and bust down the barriers that could be holding you back from creating future leaders!
